Flood toll hits 13, with 6 still missing in east China province
( 2003-09-25 16:37) (China Daily)

Heavy mountain flooding has killed 13 people and left another six still missing in Yongtai county of east China's Fujian province, provincial Governor Lu Zhangong said Thursday.

More than 8,000 people were evacuated promptly from the flooded areas and 92 locals trapped by the mountain flooding were rescued, Governor Lu said, adding that the search for those missing still continues.

Rainstorms pelted Songkou and Changqing towns, both in Yongtai county, late last Saturday night, causing heavy mountain torrents and great losses in the county.
Eighty houses were tumbled or collapsed, and another some 100 were damaged to some extent. A total of 1,000 hectares of crops have been submerged, according to the provincial officials.

Preliminary investigation shows that the economic loss caused by the flooding amounted to approximately 80 million yuan (about 9. 64 million US dollars).
