Students safe after eating tainted soup The 208 students in South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region who ate soup that had been laced with poison on Monday morning, are out of danger, clinic sources have told China Daily. All of the pupils were discharged from the clinic on the same afternoon. About 150 of victims were showing obvious signs of poisoning and received emergent treatment, said a doctor from the clinic in Guangxi's Pingzheng Township, who was surnamed Wang. A bottle that was suspected of containing the poison was found on the spot and police are still investigating the matter. According to a local newspaper, students at the Pingzheng junior middle school, which has more than 1,000 students, discovered a suspicious smell while eating their breakfast from the campus canteen. A female student was quoted as saying that she felt nauseous and dizzy after eating the gruel, and was ordered by her teacher to go to the clinic for a check-up. An examination conducted by the health department found that the gruel -- a mixture of beans and animal bones -- contained a toxic pesticide called parathion-methyl. Yang said the victims only showed slight signs of poisoning, suggesting that the food contained a small amount of contaminate or the students stopped eating after noticing the odour. At the moment, the school, which used to cook food on the premises, is offering its boarding students lunch boxes from its canteen. The canteen has been closed. |
