The per-capita gross domestic product (GDP) in Southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region increased by 28.5 times in the past 40 years.

According to figures recently released by the regional statistical bureau, the per-capita GDP of Tibet went up from 241 yuan (US$29) in 1965 to 6,874 yuan (US$828) in 2003.

The GDP of Tibet as a whole rose from 327 million yuan (US$39 million) to 18.4 billion yuan (US$2.2 billion) in the same period.

Thanks to energetic efforts to develop highly-efficient agriculture and animal husbandry, the agricultural added-value in Tibet soared to 4 billion yuan (US$493 million).

Due to economic restructuring and boosting pillar industries and key enterprises, the added value of the region's industrial sector surpassed that of agriculture for the first time last year to reach 4.8 billion yuan (US$579 million).

Tibet has built a modern industrial system including tourism, recreation, IT and some other rising industries which were never heard of in old Tibet.

Local economists said the economic system and structure and overall economic volume experienced a big leap in the past four decades and strides forward towards the modern market economy.
